We of House Island offer an educational field trip that the students and teachers will enjoy.
House Island is rich in history: from the first settlement in the Portland area by white settlers (1623), the construction of Fort Scammel, the development of one of the area's major fishing villages, to the U.S. Public Health Service building the "Ellis Island" of Casco Bay.
Tour our Civil War era fortification with our knowledgeable Historian.
Fort Scammel started as an eight-sided wooden blockhouse in 1808. It was built to protect the harbor from the British. In the 1840's to the 1870's the Fort was modernized and enlarged with granite bastions and earthworks for the coastal defense of the United States. The students will enjoy their tour of the best preserved Civil War era fortifications.
The students always enjoy the narrated tour of the harbor on the passenger vessel "Chippewa." We will tell you of the history of the area and highlighted points of interest including area Forts, lighthouses, and watching the lobster men hauling their traps.
We have picnic tables for the students to enjoy their lunch and volleyball to use up extra energy.
Groups of over 60 are guaranteed to be private.
We are a family owned and operated business with over 50 years experience.
